AVP, Group Underwriting - Accident & Health and Specialty Products

A&H Reinsurance – Toronto, Ontario

Position Summary: Reporting to the President, the incumbent will underwrite new group business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines. This position will develop strong client partnerships, and client-focused solutions and provide quality client service.

Core Responsibilities

RMA is a multi-functional, dynamic company, so you will be expected to be flexible in your role, however, the core responsibilities are as follows:

  • Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit. Identify exposure and risk from information provided.
  • Underwrite renewal business and implement corrective measures on renewal accounts as needed. Handle related servicing.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
  • Research and develop pricing and contract wording for new group Life, LTD and A&H products.
  • Communicate with underwriting management on group accounts and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate.
  • Work closely with carrier partners for the placement of business.
  • Some travel for industry conferences and client meetings, primarily in Canada and USA.
  • Participate in client presentations and audits as required. Develop supporting presentation material.
  • Work closely with external peers and management to support the execution of the overall group business strategy.

Education, Skills and Experience

  • 10 years of Life and Accident & Health group underwriting experience
  • Knowledge and experience with reinsurance concepts and practices
  • Established broker relationships
  • Completion of a post-secondary undergraduate degree program
  • ASA or LLQP designation
  • Other life and health, or property and casualty insurance professional qualifications would be an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills
  • Working proficiency in French would be an asset
  • High proficiency in MS Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams)
  • Ability to follow process and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and be a team player
  • Knowledgeable in insurance coverage forms, policy language, products, and claims processes
  • Experience establishing and maintaining collaborative working partnerships with clients

Director, Underwriting, Life Reinsurance

Life Reinsurance – Toronto, Ontario

Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Business Development, the purposes of this role are 1) to manage all underwriting aspects of formal and informal life insurance applications on a facultative basis and 2) develop and refine the Company’s underwriting strategies, guidelines and procedures.

General Accountabilities

    1. Leads and performs large case underwriting in consideration of Company guidelines, industry regulations and service level standards.
    2. Develops underwriting strategies and refines large case underwriting guidelines and procedures.
    3. Collaborates with key stakeholders to gather information necessary for effective decision-making and to select profitable risks.
    4. Understands the contestable and litigated claims review process to make recommendations as assigned.
    5. Participates in and provides analysis and input during the life reinsurance pricing process.
    6. Keeps abreast of evolving underwriting practices and consistently researches industry trends, analyzing the competitive landscape to offer the best underwriting solutions.
    7. Responsible for the updates and maintenance requirements of the Company underwriting manual and underwriting system.
    8. Establishes and promotes effective business relationships with clients, colleagues and overseas business partners.
    9. Provides training to less experienced teammates as well as external business partners on Company underwriting procedures, guidelines and practices.
    10. Performs client audits to ensure adherence to agreed customer risk profiles, underwriting policies and operational processes.
    11. Works on assigned projects pertaining to underwriting and Division initiatives.

Education, Skills and Experience

  • Completion of post-secondary education.
  • 10 or more years experience in underwriting individual life insurance
  • In-depth knowledge of large case and reinsurance-focused technical underwriting.
  • Current approval authority at least $10 million.
  • Knowledge of life, group life, critical illness, longevity
  • Exposure to special risk underwriting, such as athletes, entertainers, and foreign nationals
  • FLMI, FALU designations desirable but not required
  • Demonstrated skills in:
    • problem-solving
    • critical thinking
    • risk assessment
    • decision making and sound judgement
    • negotiation and managing conflict
  • Ability to interpret complex financial documents including profit/loss statements, income statements, and balance sheets, familiarity with estate growth calculations.

Associate Director, Life Reinsurance

Life Reinsurance – Toronto, Ontario

Position Summary: Reporting to the Vice President & Actuary, Strategic Initiatives, the incumbent will lead the modelling and analysis to support proportional and non-proportional reinsurance programs for both individual and group life products as well as longevity (pension risk transfer) risk solutions.

Core Accountabilities

RMA is a multi-functional dynamic company, so you will be expected to be flexible in your role; however, the core responsibilities are as follows:

  • Develop pricing for new business and renewal accounts; present experience analysis findings, pricing methodolgy, economic, outlook/profitability and key risks to reinsurer partners.
  • Model liability cashflows, reserves, and capital requirements to support pension risk transfer deals using Moody’s Analytics AXIS; perform stochastic analysis.
  • Develop and maintain existing relationships with brokers, carriers, and reinsurers; correspond to ad-hoc requests in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the administration area to establish business processes to reconcile data and monitor experience.
  • Build a robust framework for consistent performance measurement and reporting of new lines of business.
  • Some travel for industry conferences and client meetings required, primarily in Canada and USA.
  • Provide support to develop presentation material and participate in client presentations and audits as required.
  • Research new expansion opportunities and work closely with management to support the execution of the overall business strategy.
  • Provide analytical support on new initiatives and special projects.

    What You Bring to the Role:

    • In-depth knowledge of group benefits products and pension plans
    • Broad understanding of reinsurance concepts/structures
    • Strong analytical and communication skills to deliver written/verbal presentations to various stakeholders with data-driven recommendations
    • High proficiency in Excel and Moody’s Analytics AXIS; coding and database knowledge with R/Python/Access would be an asset
    • ASA or FSA with (re)insurance and/or consulting experience is preferred
    • Self-starter and a strong individual contributor who thrives in a dynamic environment with challenges that require outside of the box thinking
