The 2015 Society of Actuaries Annual Meeting was held from October 11 to 14, 2015 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. More than 2,000 delegates from all corners of the globe attended this conference, which continues to prove an effective venue for actuaries and insurance professionals to meet and to discuss business, leading edge issues and trends that impact the industry.
In order to enhance brand awareness, as with the prior year’s Annual Meeting, RMA continued as a silver sponsor for the conference. Ed Yeung, Howard Bernstein, and Douglas Lum, from RMA, attended the 2015 edition of the gathering.

On Friday, September 25th, RMA treated staff and their guests to dinner, followed by a night at the theatre to see the musical production “Kinky Boots”. This award winning musical opened in Toronto on June 16, 2015 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, which has been hosting live theatre since its opening in 1907. The production has proven to be so popular that it has just been extended for a fourth time since its debut.
RMA held it’s 16th annual golf classic at The Country Club in Woodbridge, Ontario on Wednesday, September 9, 2015. 36 players enjoyed a challenging round of golf, followed by dinner and our traditional awards ceremony. This year’s top Foursome was comprised of representatives from Canada Life, Aon Benfield, Hannover Re and RMA. The ‘male low gross’ award went to Craig Emuss of Northbridge Insurance, and the ‘female low gross’ award went to Denise Garagan of Denny Marketing Inc.

On July 8th, RMA staff were treated to an evening of entertainment and dining on Lake Ontario aboard the Pioneer Queen. In keeping with the theme of this year’s event, Mardi Gras, staff members decked themselves out in traditional beads and other parade regalia, feasted on jambalaya and participated in various games related to the carnival. Congratulations go out to the Gold Team for winning the New Orleans Trivia Challenge. We would also like to extend our thanks and appreciation to our staff event coordinator, Susan Vance, for organizing another successful outing, and to RMA for its generosity.
RMA’s pre-Canadian Reinsurance Conference (CRC) reception was held this year on Monday, April 13th, at the CBC Building in downtown Toronto. In celebration of the Pan Am games, which Toronto will proudly be hosting this summer, RMA’s guests were treated to a taste of what is to come. Comedian Laurie Elliot hosted Opening Ceremonies from the intimate surroundings of the Glenn Gould Studio, while performers from the Cadence Dance Academy, Zero Gravity Circus, So You Think You Can Dance, Juno Award nominee Shakura S’Aida and Steel Pan band The Vibes kept the audience entertained with music and dance representative of many of the participating nations and scheduled athletic events.
The performances were choreographed by Pierre Valcarcel of Daniel et Daniel, who once again catered our event, offering up a delicious selection of international dishes from across The Americas.
Guests were also invited to try their skills at Archery, Basketball, Shuffleboard, and the always popular Foosball, with medals and prizes being awarded to Melanie Laberge of Aon, Isabelle Bouchard of RGA, Tim Hardie of Industrial Alliance and Robert Litt of Trisura. Congratulations to our winners!

ReFocus is one of the more highly regarded annual industry meetings in North America, being jointly chaired by the Society of Actuaries and the American Council of Life Insurance. The 2015 edition of ReFocus was held from March 1 to 4 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference is attended by many influential personalities, leaders, and decision makers in the insurance industry and over 600 delegates from across the globe were in attendance this year to engage in discussions on a broad range of topics including international growth, innovation, longevity, ebola, regulatory reporting and climate change.
The ReFocus meeting continues to be an effective networking venue for insurance and reinsurance practitioners to meet and to discuss business, and trending issues that impact the industry. Howard Bernstein, Steve Hardacre and Douglas Lum attended the forum on behalf of RMA this year.
On Friday, March 27th, RMA hosted a luncheon to celebrate the retirement of Tessie de los Santos after a lengthy career with RMA.
Tessie was one of RMA’s earliest employees having joined the company in March 1998 to develop and eventually manage RMA’s Life Treaty and Claims unit. In 2013, she elected to transfer her focus to the development of a new function at RMA in the field of Auditing Services. Tessie has been a vital member of the RMA team for 17 years and her presence will be missed.
We wish her a very rewarding retirement and all the best in her future endeavours.
On January 7, 2015, RMA hosted an NHL client appreciation event at the Air Canada Centre. Local clients of RMA’s A&H and Insurance Divisions were invited to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Washington Capitals from one of the Centre’s catered suites. The Leafs may not have had their best night, losing to the Capitals 6-2, but still managed to entertain the crowd nonetheless. We would like to thank our clients for braving the bitter cold to join us for this outing and look forward to seeing you at our next event.
On Halloween Day, 2014, RMA held its 2nd Annual Staff Halloween Party in its newly renovated boardroom, decorated especially for the occasion. An in-house lunch was served, with prizes being handed out for the three best costumes. Medha Beehuspoteea of RMA’s Insurance Solutions department took first place, while Marilou De Leon and Evangeline Diaz of the Life Reinsurance department were awarded 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Douglas Lum, RMA’s Managing Director of Life Reinsurance presented at the Pacific Rim Actuaries Club of Toronto (PRACT) Dinner on October 9, 2014 at the Dynasty Cuisine Restaurant in Yorkville. The event was attended, primarily, by actuaries in the Toronto area that have interest in the Pacific Rim insurance industry. Given Douglas’ experience working in Asia, his discussion was focused on the rationale behind assessing capital management reinsurance structures in Asia, from regulatory to accounting to actuarial issues. The theme of this year’s annual client appreciation event was April Fool’s – “more than meets the eye”. Over 100 clients and guests from across North America and as far away as the United Kingdom attended our event. It was held on the evening prior to the Canadian Reinsurance Conference (CRC), at Roy Thomson Hall in downtown Toronto. Entertainment was provided by the Dueling Piano’s with unique and imaginative prizes awarded during the evening; themed food was created and catered by Daniel et Daniel. Refocus is an annual conference jointly organized by the ACLI and SOA. RMA attended the conference and hosted an evening of great food and entertainment for our clients. This year’s entertainment was the Cirque du Soleil performance of Michael Jackson’s ONE held at Mandalay Bay. RMA’s guests were entertained by a dazzling spectacle of acrobatics, dance, special effects and music celebrating Michael Jackson’s achievements.
